"The Great Displacement: Climate Change and the Next American Migration" by Jake Bittle compassionately tells their stories and uncovers how government and insurance policies are shaping who rebuilds and who retreats.

The Living on Earth Book Club, UMass Boston School for the Environment, Sustainable Solutions Lab at UMass Boston and the Boston College International Studies and Environmental Studies Departments proudly present this free, live conversation between author Jake Bittle and Host Steve Curwood, with a special introduction by distinguished guest, UMass Boston Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s Magazine, and a number of other publications. He is also a contributing writer for Grist. (Photo: Jasmine Clarke) Marcelo Suárez-Orozco (Chancellor @University of Massachusetts Boston) Marcelo Suárez-Orozco is UMB's ninth Chancellor. Previously, the Chancellor served as the inaugural UCLA Wasserman Dean and Distinguished Prof. of Education. Dr. Suárez-Orozco’s research focuses on conceptual and empirical problems in the areas of cultural psychology and psychological anthropology with a focus on the study of mass migration, globalization, and education. He is the author of numerous scholarly essays, award-winning books, edited volumes, and scholarly papers in a range of disciplines and languages in international journals. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, W. T. Grant, Spencer, Rockefeller, Hewlett, Ford and Carnegie, and multiple others. Dr. Suárez-Orozco lives in Boston with his wife, the eminent psychologist of immigration Carola Suárez-Orozco. Carola and Marcelo’s hobbies include taking Lilly—their Papillon—for long walks in Boston Harbor and, whenever possible, biking in the woods of Western Mass. Steve Curwood (Host and Executive Producer @Living on Earth) Steve Curwood is Executive Producer and Host of Living on Earth, which is aired on more than 250 public radio stations in the USA. Steve's relationship with public radio goes back to 1979 when he began as a reporter and host of Weekend All Things Considered. He also hosted NPR's World of Opera. Steve has been a journalist for more than 30 years with experience at NPR, CBS News, the Boston Globe, WBUR-FM/Boston and WGBH-TV/Boston. He shared the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service as part of the Boston Globe's education team, and is also the recipient of the 2003 Global Green Award for Media Design and the 2003 David A. Brower Award from the Sierra Club for excellence in environmental reporting. A faculty associate of the Harvard University Center for the Environment, he is also a professor of practice at UMass Boston. He lives in Southern New Hampshire on a small woodlot with his wife and family.
