Are the developers aware that the former Columbia Point was 20-30 story buildings and determined to be a detriment to the inhabitants as well as to the surrounding community? It was cut down to the more reasonable heights we have now at Harbor Point - much to the improvement for inhabitants and the surrounding community.

tracy, I'm not sure how the CAC got appointed--based on who is on it, it looks to me like the developer & BPDA chose. Here's the list https://caughtindot.com/dorchester-bay-city-advisory-committee-meeting/
Sarah Horsley she/her
01:10:32
@ Tracy my understanding of how Community Advisory Committees get chosen is that the Mayor's office reaches out to various groups to ask for recommendations of people to serve on the committee. It's not a very democratic or transparent process, which not surprisingly, often results in committees that are not representative of BIPOC folks, low income folks and other marginalized groups.

I lived off Bowdoin for 5 years. That old manufacturing site needed to be revitalised. But this new DotBloc plan doesn't fit my neighbourhood. The 'promise' of that development made my landlord raise rents in anticipation. Displacement was happening in 4 years ago, and the site is still a dirty dusty lot that adds nothing. Displacement without development...

Actually, you might be surprised that many local civic associations are recently and very belatedly understanding the negative impact that gentrification is having on their neighborhoods. It's clear that there is a growing understanding that the next generation can't afford to live here.

Chris Fung

@Sydney, absolutely, but it’s a bit more difficult than just turning up. We’ve tried multiple times in our association.
Jaely Pereira
01:38:16
@Maya - (apologies as Janrey and I are just getting to your earlier question!) We want to uplift with what Sarah and Eduardo have said. With the residence halls built on our campus as well, we have seen an increase of campus presence of students who are able to afford on-campus or off-campus housing, but a decrease in presence of our commuter students who are unable to afford the housing. We also have many UMB students who have been directly impacted by gentrification, and pushed out of their homes and neighborhoods due to increasing housing prices. With an increase in high end developments, as Tracy had mentioned earlier in the chat, there will be more police as well as non-BIPOC presence on the Point, which puts our BIPOC students at direct risk of targeted racism, discrimination, and surveillance.
Sydney Miller
01:38:28

The federal government has not had a housing policy since the 1970s. Massachusetts has prop 2 and half since the 1980s. It appears to me that both will not fund affordable housing. Therefore, with an election going on, a good strategy would be to pressure the city to sell bonds to pay for the construction of affordable housing.
Maya Martinez
01:40:18
For those who don’t know, UMB does not give financial aid for housing(dorms) here because they consider housing a luxury. Nor do they consider the cost of housing in the financial aid processes at all.
